1. Local-First Architecture

Penwright is designed with a local-first architecture. All voice transcription and text cleanup runs entirely on your Mac. Your audio recordings, transcripts, cleaned text, custom words, and voice shortcuts never leave your device.

2. Data We Collect

Because Penwright runs locally, the data we collect is minimal:

  • Account information: email address
  • License and subscription status
  • App version and macOS version
  • Anonymous usage counts (if telemetry is enabled)
  • Payment information: managed securely by Stripe

3. What We Never Receive

The following data stays exclusively on your Mac and is never transmitted to our servers:

  • Audio recordings
  • Transcribed or cleaned text
  • Screenshots or screen content
  • Clipboard content
  • Custom Words and Voice Shortcuts
  • Local notes or any dictated content

4. Third Parties

We share data with the following third parties:

  • Stripe: payment processing. Stripe receives your payment details directly. We never see your full card number.

We do not sell your data to any third party. We do not use your data for advertising purposes. No AI provider receives your voice or text data.

5. Data Retention

Account data is retained for as long as your account is active. Anonymous usage metadata is retained for 12 months for analytics purposes. Upon account deletion, all server-side data is permanently removed within 72 hours. Local data on your Mac is yours to manage.

6. Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access your personal data
  • Correct inaccurate data
  • Delete your account and all associated server-side data
  • Disable telemetry at any time
  • Withdraw consent for data processing

7. Security

All communication with our servers uses TLS 1.3 encryption. Payments are handled by Stripe (PCI DSS Level 1). See our Security page for detailed information about our local-first privacy architecture.
