Penwright dictating into Gmail

Why it works

Inbox zero is a typing problem. Penwright removes typing from the equation: hold your shortcut, talk to the recipient like a person, and watch a polished email appear. Greetings, line breaks, sign-offs. Penwright handles the small stuff so you stay in flow.

You say

um hey karen quick one can you forward me the brief from monday I lost the thread

Penwright writes

Hey Karen, quick one. Could you forward me the brief from Monday? I lost the thread.

In the wild

Three moments in Gmail where Penwright pays for itself.

The quick reply

Press the hotkey, speak the reply, Penwright types it cleanly into the open Gmail window. Three seconds instead of three minutes.

The long-form message

Three minutes of speaking turn into a structured Gmail message, cleaned, with paragraphs, in the right tone. No typing cramp.

The recurring template

Save your Gmail standard replies as snippets, expand them by voice. The local dictionary learns your names, companies, acronyms.

Day one: setting Penwright up for Gmail.

  1. Install Penwright

macOS 13 or later. Grab the .dmg from the download page, drop it in Applications, open.

  2. Pick your hotkey

Default is ⌘⇧Space. If Spotlight is in the way, set a conflict-free shortcut right away.

  3. Seed your Gmail dictionary

Drop in the names, companies, codenames that show up in your daily Gmail threads. Penwright will get them right from day one.

  4. Dictate your first Gmail message

Open Gmail, click into a text field, hold the hotkey, speak. Release. The cleaned version lands in the field.

Frequently asked

Does Penwright work in Gmail?
Yes. Penwright types wherever your cursor lands in a text field, including Gmail. There's no separate Gmail integration; Penwright uses macOS' standard text insertion.
Are my Gmail messages sent to the cloud?
No. Transcription and cleanup run locally on your Mac (EuroLLM 1.7B with Metal). If you flip Settings → AI & Style to Claude or OpenAI, then yes, but only when you explicitly activate it, and a visible CLOUD badge stays on while it is.
Does Penwright understand Gmail-specific jargon?
Decent out of the box, perfect with your own dictionary. Add company names, people names, codenames once in Settings. Penwright will type them correctly into Gmail from that moment on.
Do I need a fast internet connection?
No. Once the models are installed, Penwright works offline. Ideal for travel, airports, long calls.
